Missouri House District 1 Primary Results 2024

Cori Bush Faces Strong Primary Challenge

Representative Cori Bush (D-Mo), one of the most outspoken progressives in the House, lost her primary on Tuesday, August 7th, 2024. Bush faced a strong and well-funded primary challenge from Wesley Bell. Bell, a former state senator, campaigned on a platform of economic development and public safety. Bush, on the other hand, ran on a platform of progressive policies, including Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. In the end, Bell's message resonated more with voters in the district, and he won the primary by a margin of 52% to 48%.

Second Squad Member to Lose 2024 Primary

Bush's defeat marks the second time that a member of the "Squad" has lost a primary in 2024. Earlier this year, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) narrowly defeated a primary challenge from a more moderate Democrat. The losses of Bush and Ocasio-Cortez suggest that the progressive wing of the Democratic Party may be facing an uphill battle in the upcoming midterm elections.

The primary results in Missouri House District 1 are a sign that the Democratic Party is still deeply divided. The party is struggling to find a balance between its progressive and moderate wings, and this division could cost the party in the upcoming elections.
